Leh (/ˈleɪ/) is the joint capital and largest city of Ladakh, a union territory of India. The historical capital of the Kingdom of Ladakh was Leh, which is situated in the Leh district. The Potala Palace in Tibet was constructed at the same time as Leh Palace, the capital of the country and former home of the Ladakh royal dynasty.[Reference required] At 3,524 m (11,562 ft) above sea level, Leh is linked to Srinagar in the southwest by National Highway 1 and to Manali in the south via the Leh-Manali Highway.
